2017 Homeless Memorial

The annual Homeless Memorial Service will be held at Peanut Farm Reserve, Chaucer St, St Kilda on Wednesday 21st June 2017 from 4:30pm.

The Homeless Memorial is a non-political annual event open to the whole community. It gives community members and workers an opportunity for reflection; a safe space where people may honour and celebrate the lives of those whom have died as a result of homelessness. It is an evening that promotes social awareness and commemorates our community’s commitment to social inclusion.

The Homeless Memorial is put together and supported by a collaboration of several community members, community elders and agencies around the City of Port Philip and its surrounding areas. Community members and agencies are encouraged to participate in, volunteer at and sponsor the event; including local musicians and businesses. The event relies on volunteers and all funding is sourced through local organisations.

The 2017 event will begin at 4:30pm on Wednesday 21st June, opening with a traditional ‘Welcome to Country’ and smoking ceremony followed by a brief non-denominational service of remembrance. There is then an opportunity for community members to light a candle, share memories and reflect on those they knew who have died whilst homeless or because of homelessness. Local musicians, some of whom themselves have experienced homelessness will perform throughout the event.
